The Legacy Timeline

Mapping The Moments That Made You

When we think about legacy, it’s easy to jump straight to the future — what we want to leave behind, who we want to influence, or what difference we hope to make. But legacy isn’t only about what’s ahead; it’s also deeply rooted in what’s come before.

That’s where The Legacy Timeline comes in.

This simple yet powerful reflection tool helps you see your life and career as a journey — full of milestones, lessons, and turning points that have shaped who you are today. By mapping out these moments, you begin to recognise the threads that connect your values, achievements, and purpose.

What is The Legacy Timeline?

The Legacy Timeline is a visual exercise that charts the key moments in your personal and professional life — the highs, the lows, and the transitions in between. Think of it as your life and leadership story laid out on one page.

It invites you to reflect on:

  • Achievements you’re proud of

  • Challenges that taught you something important

  • People who’ve influenced or supported you

  • Times of change or new beginnings

  • Decisions that shifted your direction

The result is more than a timeline — it’s a mirror of your growth, resilience, and evolving sense of purpose.

How to Create Your Legacy Timeline

You can do this exercise alone, with a coach, or as part of a group workshop. All you need is paper (or a digital whiteboard), pens, and an open mind.

Step 1: Draw Your Timeline
Draw a horizontal line across your page. Label the left-hand side with the start of your career (or adult life), and the right-hand side as “Now.”

Step 2: Mark Your Milestones
Add key moments along the line — both positive and challenging. Include promotions, projects, changes, achievements, and even setbacks that shaped your path.

Step 3: Add Emotions and Insights
Above the line, note high points — moments of pride, joy, or success.
Below the line, note the dips — times of challenge, uncertainty, or change.
For each, jot down what you learned or how it influenced who you are.

Step 4: Reflect on Patterns
Step back and look at the story emerging.

  • What patterns or themes do you see?

  • When were you at your best?

  • What values shine through?

  • How have your priorities evolved?

Step 5: Look Ahead
Leave space at the right end of your timeline for your next chapter.
What do you want to add in the years ahead? What kind of impact do you hope to make?

Why It Matters

By visually mapping your legacy so far, you create clarity and perspective. It helps you:

  • Reconnect with what truly motivates you

  • Recognise your achievements (including the quiet ones)

  • Acknowledge challenges and growth

  • Identify your next direction with confidence

Many people find The Legacy Timeline deeply affirming — it reminds them of how much they’ve already achieved and how far they’ve come. It’s especially powerful for those approaching transition, whether that’s a new role, career change, or retirement.
