Summer Isn't a Pause
Summer Isn't a Pause. It's a Chance to Prepare for Your Next Chapter.
For many of us, summer arrives with a mixture of relief and exhaustion.
Projects reach natural milestones. Meetings slow down. Colleagues disappear on annual leave. Diaries finally have a little breathing space.
Yet for leaders, consultants and professionals, switching off isn't always easy.
Our minds are often still racing with the questions waiting for us in September.
What needs to change?
What opportunities should I pursue?
Am I still leading in the way I want to?
Is my work aligned with the impact I want to have?
Rather than seeing summer as simply a break from work, perhaps we can see it as something more valuable.
A season of reflection.
Reflection isn't looking backwards. It's preparing to move forwards.
One of the biggest misconceptions about reflection is that it's dwelling on the past.
Good reflection does the opposite.
It helps us make sense of where we've been so we can choose where we're going next.
Without reflection, September often becomes a return to old habits, crowded calendars and reactive leadership.
With reflection, September becomes a conscious reset.
Five questions to sit with this summer
You don't need hours of journalling or a mountain retreat.
Sometimes the most powerful coaching happens when we simply ask ourselves better questions.
Here are five I'd encourage you to revisit over the coming weeks.
1. What has given me the greatest energy this year?
Think about the conversations, projects and moments when you felt fully engaged.
What do they have in common?
How might you create more of those experiences?
2. What has quietly drained me?
Not everything that exhausts us is dramatic.
Sometimes it's the recurring meeting.
The responsibility we've outgrown.
The commitment we've never questioned.
What might you choose differently?
3. What am I most proud of?
Leaders are often quick to move on to the next challenge.
Pause.
Notice what you've achieved.
Celebrate progress, not just perfection.
4. What do I want my leadership to be known for?
When people describe working with you, what do you hope they'll say?
Kind? Brave? Thoughtful? Authentic? Consistent?
Your legacy is built through everyday behaviours, not one defining moment.
5. What one change would make the biggest difference this autumn?
Not ten changes. Not a complete reinvention.
Just one intentional shift.
Often that's enough to create real momentum.
Give yourself permission to reset
September has always felt like a second New Year.
Children return to school. Organisations launch new priorities.Budgets, programmes and strategies gather pace.
It's a natural point to reset.
But the best resets don't begin in September. They begin now.
In the quiet moments over a morning coffee.
On a walk.
While reading a book.
Watching the sea.
Sitting in the garden.
Those moments of space allow new ideas to surface.
Legacy is created one season at a time
At Avie Consultancy, I spend much of my time helping leaders navigate change, transitions and the next chapter of their careers.
One thing I've learned is this:
The leaders who create the greatest impact aren't necessarily the busiest.
They're the most intentional.
They pause. They reflect. They learn.
And then they move forward with clarity.
My invitation to you this summer is simple.
Don't rush through it.
Use the space to reconnect with what matters most.
September will come soon enough.
When it does, I hope you'll return not just rested but clearer about the legacy you want to create in the months ahead.
Reflection Prompt
Before September arrives, ask yourself:
If this autumn became one of the most significant seasons of my career, what would I need to start, stop or continue doing today?
Sometimes one powerful question is all it takes to begin your next chapter.
